Each year, we offer the opportunity for medical professionals from developing countries to come to the United States for an intensive educational program. Our traveling fellows are selected from a large group of candidates and are chosen based on not only their skills but also their ability to teach medical professionals in their home country. We have been fortunate to be able to work with some of the nation’s most talented young surgeons and medical professionals.
OrthoNations provides full financial support for travel expenses, meals, and lodging while fellows are in the United States. This is a rare opportunity that would not be financially possible for them otherwise. Fellowships range from as short as two weeks to as long as three months, depending on the goals of the educational program.
During their time in the United States, we focus on patient evaluations and surgical indications in the office setting. We also teach surgical techniques and alternatives in the operating room. The traveling fellows will also spend time in our Surgical Skills Academy, where they will work with anatomic specimens and perform complex surgical procedures. We focus on techniques that can be employed in their own operating rooms with the limited resources available to them. This way they can hone their surgical skills in a setting that allows them to bring these skills back to their patients at home.
While in the United States, the traveling fellows have the opportunity to attend medical conferences around the country with members of our OrthoNations team. They also present synopses of what medicine is like in their home hospitals, offering an eye-opening experience for those of us accustomed to more advanced medical systems.
Over the years, we have developed strong friendships with medical staff from these developing countries. These friendships allow us to interact routinely via electronic and social media so that we can connect and offer advice for complex cases occurring around the globe, even when we are not physically together.
These friendships and bonds have resulted in one of the most fulfilling aspects of the OrthoNations program.
